// Hsinchu Jiu-gang Island is a sandbar island located at the mouth of the Touqian River, with a total perimeter of 1.83 kilometers. This project takes film and photo paper as an ecotone— a material space at the margins of cultural-ecological consciousness and image production. The island’s edge is divided into 100-meter segments and explored over months and years through walking, measuring, and collecting local plant life, river water, and soil. Using alternative photographic techniques and soil chromatography, the work creates moving abstract images in collaboration with the island’s ecological elements and environment.

// 新竹舊港島為河中沙洲島,位於頭前溪出海口間,總環島里程1.83公里。作品以底片、感光相紙作為生態交錯區,一種文化生態意識與影像生產邊緣效應的物質區間,將島緣以百公尺為單位,時間以年月為度,逐一步行測量採集島緣植物、頭前溪水及濕地土壤等物質,透過替代性攝影、土壤色譜層析法等技術,生產與生態環境合作的抽象活動影像。

// Soil chromatogram of island edge wetland
Soil Chromatography initially developed by the Russian botanist Mikhail Tsvet, soil chromatography is a photographic process that indicates the chemical, physical and biological characteristics of the earth. The work collects soil from the wetland area on the edge of Jiu-gang Island and performs chromatography, then visually processes it into a moving image.

土壤色譜層析法由俄羅斯植物學家米哈伊爾.茨維特(Mikhail Tsvet)所創,是一種透過攝影技術展現土壤化學、物理和生物特性的方法。作品採集舊港島緣濕地區域的土壤進行色譜層析後,再視覺處理為活動影像。

Plants from the Jiu-gang Island were collected every 100 meters for phytogram, and the negatives were then made into abstract moving images.
